GIZ: Sustainable Pasture Management in Armenia. 2015
In Armenia natural fodder areas, such as pastures and grasslands are vital resource for livestock keeping and are of foremost value for biodiversity conservation. In recent years, a drastic increase in livestock numbers and irregular use of pasture areas have led to significant deterioration of the condition of pasture land throughout the country.
Since 2012 the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the SDA NGO have been cooperating with GIZ. The objective of the cooperation is to introduce pasture monitoring and sustainable management practices.
This video reports on developed methods, such as the application of information technology and the introduction of a toolkit for community-based pasture monitoring and management in the Sisian region of Armenia. The methods follow an efficient, low-cost and easy-to-use approach. During all steps of implementation the active involvement of local communities has been put into focus. The application of the newly developed methods is leading to an improved efficiency of sustainable pasture management, as well as to positive environmental and socio-economic developments within the piloted areas.
